One slow drain or the whole house?

The first question tells us almost everything. If only one sink or tub is slow, the clog is in that fixture's branch line, and it's usually hair, soap, or grease close to the trap. If several fixtures are slow at once, or the tub gurgles when the toilet flushes, or water comes up a basement floor drain, the clog is in the main line that carries everything to the street.

What you noticeWhere the clog usually is
One sink or tub draining slowlyThat fixture's trap or branch line
Kitchen sink backs into the other bowlKitchen branch, usually grease
Toilet and tub both slowMain line or a shared branch
Water at the basement floor drainMain sewer line
Gurgling after flushingMain line or a blocked vent

Branch clogs are quick. Main-line clogs need a larger machine run from the cleanout, and they're where a camera inspection pays for itself.

How we clear drains

  • Hand and drum cables for sinks, tubs and toilets, sized so we don't scratch fixtures or crack old traps.
  • Sectional machines for main lines from the basement cleanout, with cutting heads for roots.
  • Hydro-jetting for grease-packed kitchen lines and lines with heavy scale, when the pipe is sound enough to take it.
  • Camera inspection after clearing any main line that's backed up more than once, so we can see roots, cracks, offsets or a sag.

Why Clifton drains clog

Older cast-iron drain lines, common in the pre-war houses near the Passaic and in parts of Delawanna and Dutch Hill, roughen on the inside as they age, and that rough surface catches grease and paper. Clay sewer laterals let tree roots in at the joints, especially on streets lined with mature trees. And in multi-family buildings, a single kitchen line often serves several units, so grease builds up fast.

Post-war homes in Allwood and Richfield tend to have better-sloped lines, but by now their original cast iron or clay is 60 to 80 years old and showing the same wear.

Protect your drains between visits

  1. Wipe greasy pans into the trash before washing. Grease cools and hardens in the pipe.
  2. Use a hair catcher on tub and shower drains.
  3. Flush only toilet paper. "Flushable" wipes don't break down.
  4. Skip caustic drain cleaners. They rarely clear a real clog and can damage old pipes and the next plumber's hands.
  5. If the main line has backed up before, book a camera inspection before the next heavy-rain season.

If the camera shows a broken or sagging line, see our sewer line repair service. If you have sewage in the basement right now, treat it as an emergency.

Frequently asked questions

How much does drain cleaning cost in Clifton?

A single-fixture clog usually costs less than a main-line clearing, which needs a larger machine and access from the cleanout. Typical North Jersey main-line cleaning runs roughly $250 to $700 depending on access and roots. A camera inspection is quoted separately. You get the price before we start.

Why does my drain keep clogging?

Repeat clogs usually mean something in the pipe is catching debris: tree roots at a joint, a crack, an offset where sections shifted, or a sag that holds water. A camera inspection shows which one, so the fix targets the cause instead of the symptom.

Is hydro-jetting safe for old pipes?

Hydro-jetting is safe for sound pipe and very effective on grease and scale, but it isn't the right tool for cracked clay or badly corroded cast iron. We camera the line first when there's any doubt about its condition.

Should I use chemical drain cleaner?

We don't recommend it. Caustic cleaners rarely clear a full clog, they can harm older pipes and fixtures, and they create a hazard for whoever opens the drain next. A cable or plunger is safer for a minor clog.

What's the difference between a drain and a sewer problem?

A drain problem is inside the house, in a fixture or branch line. A sewer problem is in the main line that carries all waste from the house to the street. Several slow fixtures or water at the floor drain point to the sewer line. See sewer line repair.

Do you clear clogs at night?

Yes, when it's urgent, like sewage backing up or the only toilet blocked. We answer 24 hours Sunday through Friday. A single slow sink can usually wait for a daytime appointment.

Can you camera my line before I buy a house in Clifton?

Yes. A pre-purchase sewer camera inspection is a smart move on older Clifton homes, and we give you the video and a plain-English summary of what we saw.
