Why sump pumps fail when you need them most
A sump pump sits quiet for months, then has to run every few minutes for hours during a storm. That's when weak parts give out. The common failures:
- Stuck float switch. The float catches on the pit wall or a cord and never tells the pump to start.
- Burned-out motor. Pumps usually last about 7 to 10 years. Many we replace are older.
- Power outage. The storm that fills the pit also knocks out the power. Without a backup, the pump stops.
- Frozen or clogged discharge. In winter, the line outside freezes. Year-round, debris blocks it.
- Undersized pump. A pump that kept up for years falls behind in a heavier storm.
Our article on basement backups in heavy rain explains how groundwater and sewer backups differ.
What we install
| Option | What it does | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Submersible primary pump | Sits in the pit, quieter, handles more water | Most Clifton basements |
| Pedestal pump | Motor above the pit, easy to service | Small or shallow pits |
| Battery backup pump | Runs when power fails or the primary can't keep up | Any finished basement |
| Water-powered backup | Uses city water pressure, no battery | Homes where battery upkeep is a concern |
| Alarm | Sounds when water rises too high | Every system |
| Check valve and discharge line | Stops water flowing back, carries it away from the foundation | Every system |
Where Clifton sump problems come from
Homes near the Passaic River, near Weasel Brook and the low ground around Lakeview and Botany Village deal with high groundwater after long rains. Hillside homes in parts of Allwood and Montclair Heights get fast surface runoff instead. Both put pumps under heavy load. The 2021 remnants of Hurricane Ida flooded parts of Clifton, including buildings along Weasel Brook.
Sump pump or sewer backup?
Clear water rising from the pit or seeping at the floor-wall joint is groundwater, and that's a sump job. Dark water with a smell, coming up through a floor drain or toilet, is sewage, and that's a sewer line problem, often from a surcharged city main. Some homes need both a sump pump and a backwater valve.
Sewage ejector pumps
If you have a basement bathroom or laundry below the sewer line, waste is pumped up by a sealed ejector pump. These fail too, and when they do, it's an unpleasant emergency. We service and replace ejector pumps and their alarms.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a sump pump last?
Most sump pumps last about 7 to 10 years, less if they run constantly. If yours is near that age, replacing it before storm season is cheaper than a flooded basement.
What does sump pump replacement cost in Clifton?
Typical North Jersey sump pump replacements run roughly $400 to $1,200 or more, depending on the pump, the discharge line and whether a battery backup is added. We quote in writing before starting.
Do I need a battery backup sump pump?
If your basement is finished, stores valuables or holds your heating equipment, yes. Heavy storms often cut power at the same time they fill the pit, and a backup keeps pumping when the primary can't.
My sump pump runs constantly. Is that bad?
During heavy rain it's normal. In dry weather, constant running can mean a stuck float, a failed check valve letting water flow back, a high water table, or a pump that's too small. Each is fixable.
Can you come during a storm?
Yes. We answer 24 hours Sunday through Friday and treat a failed pump in an active storm as an emergency.
Where should the discharge line go?
Away from the foundation, typically at least 10 feet, and to a spot where the water won't flow back or onto a neighbor's property. Many towns don't allow sump discharge into the sanitary sewer. We route it to code.
Why does my basement smell after it floods?
Groundwater floods can leave a musty smell; sewage backups leave a sewer smell and are a health hazard. If you suspect sewage, avoid contact and call. See sewer line repair.
